Feeling more at home in a new neighborhood

When you’re relocating, whether across the country or less than an hour away from your current residence, it’s quite common to go through an adjustment period before you can settle in to your new neighborhood.

The key to a seamless adjustment to living in a new hometown is to explore – the sooner you discover where everything is, the faster you’ll feel more comfortable and adjusted.

Here are a few tips that can help you feel more at home in a new area:

  • Moving to a different area can certainly be overwhelming and stressful to many people – it feels as though you’ve lost control over your daily schedule or your surroundings. It’s essential to gather all the information you can about the place you’re moving to, before, during, and after the moving process.
  • It can take awhile before you get your bearings, especially if you’re transferring to a different state. The first thing you need to do is to find out where the important places are, such as the nearest pharmacy, grocery store, gas station, mall, and so on.
  • Once you know where all the important places are, you can start looking for recreational destinations, such as cultural attractions, hiking trails, or restaurants.
  • Get in touch with your new hometown’s local convention and visitors’ bureau, as well as the local chamber of commerce. Use the web and do a quick search, as most of them have their own websites, where you can get a lot of useful information such as the phone numbers of the police department and fire station. Some local city organizations also provide free visitors’ guides, which can show you the local attractions and destinations around the area.
  • Encourage your kids to join local clubs or organizations – it’s one of the easiest ways to help them adjust to their new hometown and get to know other kids in the area.
