How to Clean Your Home’s Dirtiest Areas

May 9, 2016 | Higgins Group Real Estate

We live with some of our worst enemies under the same roof – germs are practically invisible to the eye that sometimes we don’t even know if they’re really there. How do you stay safe, then? Target the following hotspots of germ activity and clean them with these tips.

    1. Dish sponges
Sponges are home to a number of germs, and may contain at least 86% mold and yeast, and 77% coliform. To prevent transferring germs from one place to another via sponges, be diligent and microwave wet sponges for two minutes everyday. The life of a dish sponge also doesn’t last long – make sure to have a new one every two weeks.

    2. Kitchen sink
A dirty kitchen sink is not the most appealing home feature. To properly clean this second germiest spot in your home, wash and disinfect all sides and the bottom 1-2 times per week. Sanitizing drains and disposals monthly by pouring a teaspoon of household bleach in a quart of water also helps in keeping the area clean.

    3. Toothbrush holder
Toothbrush holders are favorite hangouts for coliform, mold, yeast, and staph, which makes you think twice about leaving your toothbrush there. To keep it clean and germ-free, take the time to hand wash the holder using hot, soapy water. For additional effect, wipe it with a disinfectant once or twice a week.

    4. Pet bowl
We’re not the only ones who deserve protection from germs – out beloved pets need it, too. Once a week, take time to immerse pet bowls in a solution of bleach and water. Soak for 10 minutes, rinse, and they’re good to go for the time being.

    5. Coffee reservoir
If you’re a coffee lover, keep yourself safe by disinfecting your coffee reservoir. All it takes is placing 4 cups of undiluted vinegar to the reservoir for 30 minutes, then let the vinegar run through the whole unit. Rinse with fresh water until the odor is gone. Clean your reservoir monthly or every 40-80 brew cycles, according to manufacturers.

We hope these simple tips will help in keeping your home clean and safe. Check our blog regularly for more housekeeping tips.
