How to handle your pets when you move

Relocating with Pets

Moving in to a new home by yourself can be a challenging but rewarding feat, but what should you do when you’ve got a furry friend or two with you. We’ve got a couple of tips on how to handle your pets when you make the big move.

Relocating with Pets

  1. Prepare an overnight kit.Humans get to have an overnight kit when moving homes, and pets need one, too. Prepare enough food for your pets, toys to keep them from getting bored, and grooming tools that will keep your pets comfortable during their first few days in their new home.
  2. Check in with your vet before you move.Visit your vet to inform him or her of the move so you can get your pets’ records as well as any prescription medications you need. This is especially important if you’re moving across states so your pet’s new vet will know of your pet’s medical and health history.
  3. During the move, have them relax in the quietest area you can find.Keep your pet from getting stressed by keeping it in a quiet area. You can ask your friends for anyone willing to sit your pet for you during the move, or keep it in a kennel for the whole day. Moving day can be stressful even for pets, so it’s best to keep them out of the action.
  4. If possible, finish unpacking the home before you move your pet.Pets can be quite a handful. To avoid unnecessary stress, keep your pet with a friend or in the kennel while you finish unpacking. Set up as much as you can, and then introduce the animal to its new home. Since it’s a strange environment for your pet, make sure to surround it with familiar items, such as toys and blankets.
  5. Update their tags and microchip information. If your pets have been tagged, it’s important to replace their old address and telephone number with the new one.
