Fairfield County has over 200 elementary schools, with around 159 public and 105 private elementary schools that serve more than 80,000 students. In fact, elementary schools comprise the majority of both public and private schools in Fairfield County.

These schools include Charter Schools, Special Education Schools, and Magnet Schools for public schools. And Special Program Emphasis, Montessori Schools, Alternative, Daycare, and Preschools for private schools.

Public Schools

For public elementary schools, around 49% of the student body are minorities, with Hispanics being the majority; this percentage is more than the Connecticut state average of 41%. There are about 14 students to one teacher, which is a ratio that is higher than the state average of 13:1.

Performance-wise, six public elementary schools in Fairfield County have been recognized by the Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools. These are:

Private Schools

While most of Fairfield County’s private elementary schools are non-sectarian, around 48% are religiously-affiliated, with a majority of Roman Catholic and Christian schools. Other religions associated with a school include Assembly of God, Baptist, Episcopal, Jewish, Lutheran, and Seventh Day Adventist. Some of these private elementary schools are also gender-specific, which can be either all-boys or all-girls schools.
