Jones Family Farms in Shelton

May 13th, 2016 | Higgins Group Real Estate

If you’re in the middle of a conversation about revered institutions in Shelton then you might’ve heard of the Jones Family Farms in the White Hills. Built in the 19th century, this dairy barn and homestead farmhouse is an iconic part of Shelton.

About the Jones Family Farms

Jones' Family FarmsThe Jones Family Farms would not be here today if it weren’t for Philip James Jones, who purchased the land from Jeremiah Shelton back in the 19th century. Known for the quote, “Be good to the land and the land will be good to you,” Jones sold beef, lamb, and other produce in a horse-drawn cart to the city of Derby.

The main structures of the family farms, including the dairy barn, ice house, and the family homestead were built in the late 1800s when Jones’ son, William, joined the family business. It was he who established the dairy farm. Soon after, more generations of the family joined the business and continued to develop the farm operations, expanding to grow Christmas trees, strawberries, and other fresh local ingredients.

As time went by, the farm formally became known as the Jones Family Farms in 1995. It reflects the variety of crops the farm grows and sells, as well as the generations who lent a hand in developing the business. The family patriarch, Philip, passed away in 2015, but his memory continues to live on to this day.
