With a rich heritage, numerous museums and landmarks, and over 3,000 art institutions, history buffs will never run out of places to explore in Fairfield County.

If you’re planning to go on a historic tour of the region, you should definitely mark these interesting destinations on your map:

Center for Contemporary Printmaking

At this Norwalk attraction, visitors can join a printmaking tour and gain more knowledge regarding the history of printing, as well as how it compares with today’s trends. The center is located inside a 19th century stone carriage house, where visitors can witness and participate in various printmaking demonstrations involving traditional tools and materials.

Sheffield Island

Visitors can take a relaxing cruise from Norwalk Harbor to get to Sheffield Island, where they can walk on a scenic nature trail at the end of which is Sheffield Island Light. The historic lighthouse was built in 1868 and shares the same architectural design with other well-known lighthouses such as the Great Captain Island Lighthouse, Morgan Point Lighthouse, and Old Field Point Light.

Wilton is a historical town located in Norwalk River Valley. Here, visitors can get a unique look back in time, as the town is home to two 18th century chimney houses that feature an art gallery, a fascinating vintage toy collection, working blacksmith demonstrations, and 14 period rooms from the colonial and Victorian eras.

Philip Johnson Glass House

The Philip Johnson Glass House is located in New Canaan, and is considered a National Trust Historic Site. Join a walking tour that will take you through Glass House itself, art galleries, and various exhibits.

Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum

Located in Norwalk, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum is one of the country’s earliest surviving Second Empire-style country houses. The beautiful mansion is a perfect example of Victorian-era architecture and features beautifully ornate Gilded Age interiors and furniture.
